Students love selfies and twitter so I put them together and created a hashtag for subjects I teach and started posting photos! The students think it's cool to see themselves online, they take pride in what they're doing in class, and can follow the hashtag to see what previous and future students are doing in the same class! The college often re-tweets the photos providing positive exposure to the students and the class! Below are some examples from my classes last fall! Environmental Science Lab...Students in the Environmental Science Lab spend one class period learning about the pond on campus. They note all of plants and animals they find around the pond and sketch a food web. Then they take samples of pond water to find the the values for dissolved oxygen, dissolved nitrogen and identify micro organisms that live in the pond water. If the levels of dissolved oxygen are low and dissolved nitrogen is high, students should see an increased amount of algae in their water samples. Microbiology Lab...Students in microbiology lab stab an agar tube with a bacteria sample to see if the organism is motile. The agar changes to a red color in the presence of the bacteria. Non motile organisms will turn the slim stab line red while motile organisms, such as E. coli, spread beyond the stab line causing more of the agar to become red. Biology Lecture...Students in the biology lecture learn about genetics by drawing their own dragons based on characteristics determined by punnet squares. Body color is a trait that exhibits incomplete dominance - a blending of traits. Dragons that have the alleles BB are blue, WW are yellow, and BW are green. Biology Lab...Above, students in the biology lab learn about pH and the scientific method by exposing protists to different pH environments to learn which environments are most suitable for their survival. They found the more wiggly protists in pH 7! Below is a photo taken by a student of what she saw in the microscope - a hydra! Thanks for the prompt, #EduBlogsClub!
