Last week our family took our annual military space-a vacation to Europe. Space-a travel is FREE for active duty members and their families, as well as retired military. My husband is active duty army so we travel as a Category III. Priority for seats on military flights with space available is first determined by category and then by the amount of time you have been signed up to travel. In our case, that is the time my husband has been on leave. It's often much easier to travel home from vacation than to the vacation spot since more time on leave has built up - thus an earlier sign up date than those just starting their leave. Websites and Apps for Military Space A Travel...A great reference for Space-A travel is SpaceA.net! This website has a very detailed FAQ and all kinds of useful information about bases and airplanes and who can travel when. SpaceA.net The TakeaHop website and app allows users to see posted flights and to sign up at the air terminals so they may take a flight from that base. All passengers must be registered in the system in order to take advantage of space-a travel. Passport numbers and travel orders need to be faxed or emailed to each terminal. Made it on the first try! This time we got lucky and made it on the first flight we tried for! A flight out of McGuire Air Force Base to Germany on a C5. Below are pictures of the airplane. Passengers travel in a compartment above the cargo area that has backwards facing seats, no windows, and requires earplugs due to the noise. Military Space-A Food...One of the perks of travelling on a space-a flight is the chance to purchase an in flight meal served in a box. The meals are handed out to passengers after they are seated so they can dig in any time during the flight! Military box meal photos from Morris Smith Travels - thanks! Will this plane get off the ground?

Hi, came across the link to your blog on FB. We are an active duty Navy family of 5 who would in Ft Worth and would like to attempt traveling this way. We do have an older child who is quadriplegic and in a wheelchair though and I was wondering if it's even possible? We include him in everything we do although its a challenge, so leaving him behind is not an option. Do you have any info about traveling Space A with special needs?

Nice article. The C5 is one of my favorite planes to fly Space A on. Lots of leg room. Since this post was written there have been many new Space A sites added to the internet. Some good, some not so good. Those box lunches they serve now are okay and pretty much worth the money, if you don't get stuck with the PB&J sandwich. At least that's my opinion. I like the ham & cheese sandwich.
