As the school year winds down, many high school students take advanced placement exams hoping to earn a few college credits before they graduate high school. This year I had the opportunity to help score free response questions on the Advanced Placement Environmental Science exam as an AP Reader.

We woke up each morning at 6 am, showered and dressed, then walked 3 blocks to the Duke Energy Convention Center where a lovely breakfast buffet awaited us on the 3rd floor. No later than 8 am we were at our assigned seats opening up the first of many pink booklets. Learning the ropes...
The work day...
Working at the table...Muffled chatter was heard the first days as readers asked questions about responses not on the rubric:
For the math questions, students needed to show their work in order to earn a point - even if it was easy enough to calculate in their heads! Student handwriting - we had to read it!And the things students wrote - rap lyrics, discussions about which boy to date, a story about why snakes don't have legs, notes about the teacher not teaching, apologies for not knowing answers, some amazing doodles, and too many blank pages... New vocabulary words...
